Tour itinerary: Gondar → Debark → Addi Arkay
Day One: Gondar to Sankabar Camp
Begin your journey with a transfer from Gondar to Sankabar, the first campsite in the Simien Mountains National Park. You’ll be dropped off about two hours before the camp, giving you the chance to start trekking early and enjoy the dramatic views along the escarpment.
On the way, you’ll likely encounter large groups of Gelada monkeys, known for their striking red chests and social behavior.
Overnight at Sankabar Camp (3,250m).
Day Two: Sankabar to Gich Camp via Jinibar Falls
After breakfast, start a scenic 6-hour trek to Gich Camp, passing through lush highland terrain and the beautiful Jinibar Waterfall.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy wide-open views, see native flora, and possibly more Gelada monkeys.
Camp at Gich (3,600m), surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
Day Three: Gich to Chennek via Imet Gogo
This is one of the most rewarding days of the trek. You’ll climb to Imet Gogo (3,926m), one of the best viewpoints in the Simiens, with panoramic views of dramatic cliffs and valleys.
As you walk across the Gich Plateau, you’ll see many giant Lobelia plants, unique to the region.
The trail continues to Chennek Camp (3,620m), where there’s a good chance to spot Walia ibex and, if you’re lucky, the elusive Ethiopian wolf.
Approximate trekking time: 9 hours.
Day Four: Chennek to Sona via Ras Bwahit
Today you’ll summit Ras Bwahit (4,430m), the second-highest peak in the Simien Mountains. The views from the top are breathtaking, stretching across the rugged mountain range.
Afterward, descend and continue on to Sona Camp, the final stop in the highlands.
Expect around 8 hours of trekking through ever-changing landscapes.
Day Five: Sona to Mekarbiya – Entering the Lowlands
Begin your descent into the lowlands today as you leave the alpine zone behind. The trek to Mekarbiya Camp (2,065m) takes approximately 5 hours.
Enjoy warmer temperatures and a change in scenery, with villages and farmlands coming into view. This is a good opportunity to see how local communities live in this remote area.
Day Six: Mekarbiya to Mulit
Continue trekking for about 5 hours to Mulit Camp (2,100m). The path becomes more gentle as you follow a scenic route through valleys and terraced hillsides.
You’ll pass through small villages where you can interact with locals and get a feel for rural Ethiopian life. This is one of the more relaxed days of the trek.
Day Seven: Trek to Adi Arkay and Return to Gondar
Enjoy a short morning hike to Adi Arkay, where your trekking journey officially ends. You’ll be met by your driver for the return transfer back to Gondar, with time to reflect on a truly unforgettable adventure through the Simien Mountains.
